Overview

At the beginning of Nepali New Year 2083, WiFi Nepal introduced an attractive upgrade offer for existing users. As a previous subscriber of their 50 Mbps plan, I decided to take advantage of this deal and upgrade to 100 Mbps.

This article is a detailed technical review of:

  • Pricing and upgrade process

  • Hardware changes (router replacement)

  • Real-world speed test results (Ethernet & Wi-Fi)

  • Gaming performance improvements

  • Practical limitations and workarounds

Upgrade Offer Details

The offer was surprisingly straightforward:

  • Package: Upgrade from 50 Mbps → 100 Mbps

  • Cost: NPR 3700 for 6 months (renewal only)

  • Hidden Charges: None

  • Extras Provided:

    • Free dual-band router

    • Free helmet (promotion item)

From a pricing perspective, this is a strong value upgrade, especially considering no installation or upgrade fees were charged.

Installation & Router Replacement

After contacting customer support, the upgrade process was handled smoothly. The technician replaced my old router:

Previous Router

  • Model: Nokia G-240W-F
  • Type: Single-band (2.4 GHz only)

New Router

  • Model: Nokia G0425G-B (2021)

  • Type: Dual-band (2.4 GHz + 5 GHz

However, it’s worth noting:

The router appears to be refurbished, likely reused from older deployments (possibly from providers like WorldLink).

This is not uncommon in ISP deployments, but still important for transparency.

Speed Test Results

1. Ethernet Performance

Metric

Result

Download

90–97 Mbps

Upload

65–73 Mbps

Analysis:

  • Download speed is close to the advertised 100 Mbps.

  • Upload speed is decent but not symmetrical.

  • Overall, Ethernet performance is stable and reliable.

2. Wi-Fi Performance (Router Default)

5 GHz (Wi-Fi 5)

  • Near router: Excellent performance (close to full speed)

  • Different room:

    • Signal drops significantly

    • Sometimes fails to connect

2.4 GHz (Wi-Fi 4)

  • Download: ~20 Mbps

  • Upload: Even lower

  • Performance:

    • Weak even at close range

    • Poor penetration and consistency

Conclusion:

The stock router’s wireless performance is inconsistent and underwhelming, especially on 2.4 GHz.

Using a Secondary Router (Wi-Fi 6 Setup)

To overcome these limitations, I used my own router:

  • Model: Cudy WR3000 (Wi-Fi 6)

  • Setup:

    • Connected via WAN from ISP router

    • Used as the main wireless access point

Results with Cudy WR3000

Metric

Result

Download

~95 Mbps

Upload

~70 Mbps

Improvements:

  • Stable coverage across rooms

  • Consistent speeds

  • Better signal strength

This confirms that the bottleneck was the ISP-provided router, not the connection itself.

Gaming Performance (PUBG Mobile)

Previous Setup (50 Mbps + Single Band Router)

  • Frequent ping spikes

  • Pattern:

    • Smooth → sudden high ping → smooth again

  • Overall experience: frustrating and unstable

Even with the secondary router, the issue persisted due to limitations in the original setup.

New Setup (100 Mbps + Dual Band Router)

After upgrade and router replacement:

  • Ping range: 20 ms – 100 ms

  • Rare red spikes

  • Stable gameplay

Result: Gaming experience is now smooth and playable, with minimal interruptions.

Free Helmet – Reality Check

As part of the offer, a free helmet was included.

  • Condition: Brand new, clean, unused

  • Issue: Size did not fit properly

  • Collection: Must be picked up from nearest branch office

While it’s a nice promotional addition, the usefulness depends on fit and convenience.

Final Verdict

Pros

  • Excellent upgrade pricing (NPR 3700 / 6 months)

  • Near-advertised Ethernet speeds

  • Noticeable improvement in gaming latency

  • Free dual-band router and promotional item

Cons

  • Router is likely refurbished

  • Poor 2.4 GHz performance

  • Weak 5 GHz coverage across rooms

  • Requires external router for optimal experience

Should You Upgrade?

Yes — but with a condition.

If you:

  • Use Ethernet → Definitely worth it

  • Have your own good router → Highly recommended

  • Rely only on ISP router Wi-Fi → Expect limitations

Final Thoughts

The upgrade to 100 Mbps from WiFi Nepal under the 2083 New Year offer is worth it, especially for gamers and heavy users.

However, the experience clearly shows:

Your internet quality is only as good as your router.

With a proper Wi-Fi 6 router, the connection performs excellently. Without it, you may not fully utilize the upgraded bandwidth.
